Description

These Mexican Inspired Brownies are a delightful blend of rich chocolate, a hint of spice from cayenne pepper, and warm cinnamon. Perfect for any occasion, they’re easy to prepare and offer an irresistible sweet treat for gatherings or a simple dessert at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ounces (113g) unsweetened baking chocolate (coarsely chopped)
  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter
  • 1¾ cups (350g) sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons (10g) unsweetened cocoa powder (regular or Dutch process)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (124g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (125g) mini chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder (regular or Dutch process)
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a 9×13-inch pan with foil, then spray with cooking spray.
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the chopped baking chocolate and unsalted butter. Heat on HIGH for 2-3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until the chocolate is smooth. Stir in the sugar until well mixed.
  3. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ¾ teaspoon of cayenne pepper, salt, and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Mix well until combined.
  4. Carefully add the all-purpose flour and stir until just combined. Fold in the mini chocolate chips gently.
  5. Spread the brownie batter evenly in the prepared pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out with just a few crumbs. Allow to cool completely before slicing into squares.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, ¼ teaspoon cocoa powder, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Sprinkle this mixture over the sliced brownies.

Notes

Make sure to let the brownies cool completely before slicing for clean edges.
Adjust the cayenne pepper according to your spice preference for a milder or spicier brownie.
These brownies pair well with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
