Description

Crockpot Sloppy Joes bring irresistible flavor with simple prep. Made from lean ground beef and savory sauces, these are perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely diced (optional)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ cups ketchup
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt (plus more to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Burger buns (brioche or whole wheat)
  • Pickles
  • Shredded cheddar
  • Coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat while breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  2. Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Transfer the beef mixture to the slow cooker.
  4. Mix in ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours until thick and flavorful.
  6. Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning with more salt, vinegar, or brown sugar as desired. If too loose, cook uncovered on high for 15 to 20 minutes to thicken.
  7. Serve the cheesy mixture on toasted buns with your choice of toppings.

Notes

For added flavor, consider using a mix of ground beef and turkey.
Adjust the level of spice by varying the amount of crushed red pepper flakes based on preference.
Feel free to customize toppings with your favorites like pickles and coleslaw.
